Brand History
In 1832, Auguste Agassiz, the brother of naturalist Louis Agassiz, immersed himself in the world of watchmaking at a watch sales company in Santimier, Switzerland, under the name "Agassiz & Co." He successfully expanded the sales network of watches made in domestic industries at the time to America and beyond. In the mid-1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the business. Francillon consolidated the manufacturing processes of watches that were previously done in separate locations into one place, striving to improve the watchmaking methods. In 1867, at a place called "Longines" on the right bank of the Suze River in the Santimier Valley, the "Longines Factory" was established where watch assembly and finishing could be done in a mechanical way in one place. Francillon then brought in a young engineer from his family, Jacques David, to develop the necessary machinery to improve the watch manufacturing process. Production continued to expand constantly until the 1930s. By 1911, the "Longines Factory" employed over 1,100 workers and was exporting its products worldwide. The technical research conducted at Longines was rewarded in various ways, winning over 10 Grand Prix awards by the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, becoming known as the "most award-winning brand." In 1989, Francillon registered the name Longines and the winged hourglass logo as trademarks. Longines is a brand that has evolved its watchmaking technology in the factory and gradually built special relationships with the sports world, providing its expertise in various fields including the flagship sports of the 20th century. Since its founding in 1832, Longines has been based in Santimier, Switzerland, continuing to create watches with the themes of "tradition," "elegance," and "performance."
