| In 1832, Auguste Agassiz, the brother of renowned naturalist Louis Agassiz, delved into the world of watchmaking at a watch retail company in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, under the name "Agassiz & Co." He successfully expanded the distribution network of watches made through domestic industry at the time, reaching as far as America and other continents. In the mid-1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the business. Francillon consolidated the scattered manufacturing processes of watches into one location, striving to improve the watchmaking methods. In 1867, at a place called "Longines" on the right bank of the Suze River in the Saint-Imier valley, the "Longines Factory" was established, where watch assembly and finishing could be done in a mechanized manner in one place. Francillon later brought in a young engineer from the family, Jacques David, to develop the necessary machinery to improve the watch manufacturing process. Production continued to expand constantly until the 1930s. By 1911, the "Longines Factory" employed over 1,100 workers and was shipping its products worldwide. Longines' technological research efforts were rewarded in various forms, winning over 10 Grand Prix awards by the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, establishing itself as the "most awarded brand." In 1989, Francillon registered the name Longines and the winged hourglass logo as trademarks. Longines, registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is a brand that uses the same registered trademark and logo as it did in the past, making it the oldest brand to do so. Evolving watchmaking technology at the factory gradually established special relationships with the sports world and provided expertise in various fields, including the iconic sports of the 20th century.
