| In 1832, Auguste Agassiz, the brother of naturalist Louis Agassiz, immersed himself in the world of watchmaking at a watch sales company in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, under the name "Agassiz & Co." He successfully expanded the distribution network of watches made through domestic industry at the time to America and beyond. In the mid-1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the management. Francillon consolidated the manufacturing processes of watches that were previously done in separate locations into one place, striving to improve watchmaking methods. In 1867, on the right bank of the Suze River in Saint-Imier Valley, a place called "Longines," he established the "Longines Factory" where watch assembly and finishing could be done in a mechanical way in one place. Francillon then brought in a young engineer from his family, Jacques David, to develop the necessary machinery to improve the watchmaking process. Production continued to expand constantly until the 1930s. By 1911, the "Longines Factory" employed over 1,100 workers and was shipping its products worldwide. The technical research conducted at Longines was rewarded in various ways, winning over 10 Grand Prix awards by the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, becoming known as the "most awarded brand." In 1989, Francillon registered the name Longines and the winged hourglass logo as trademarks. Longines, registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is a brand that uses the oldest registered trademark and logo that remains the same as in the past. Evolving watchmaking technology at the factory gradually established a special relationship with the sports world and provided expertise in various fields, including the iconic sports of the 20th century.
