Brand History
In 1832, Auguste Agassiz, brother of the renowned naturalist Louis Agassiz, delved into the world of watchmaking at a Swiss watch sales company. Under the name Agassiz & Co., he successfully expanded the sales network of watches made through cottage industry to America and beyond. In the mid-1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the business. Francillon consolidated the scattered watchmaking processes into one location to improve manufacturing methods. In 1867, the Longines factory was established on the right bank of the Suze River, where watch assembly and finishing could be mechanized in one place. Francillon brought in a young engineer, Jacques David, to develop the necessary machinery for enhancing the watchmaking process. Production continued to expand until the 1930s. By 1911, the Longines factory employed over 1,100 workers and shipped its products worldwide. Longines' technical research efforts were rewarded in various forms, winning over 10 Grand Prix awards by the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, establishing the brand as the most awarded. In 1989, Francillon trademarked the name Longines along with the winged hourglass logo. Longines, registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is one of the oldest brands to use the same registered trademark and logo. Evolving watchmaking technology at the factory allowed Longines to gradually establish special relationships with the sports world, providing expertise in various fields, including the iconic sports of the 20th century. Since its founding in 1832, Longines has been based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, continuing to create watches with the themes of "tradition," "elegance," and "performance."
