Brand History
In 1832, Auguste Agassiz, brother of the renowned naturalist Louis Agassiz, ventured into the world of watchmaking at a Swiss watch sales company. Under the name Agassiz & Co., he successfully expanded the distribution network of watches made through cottage industry to America and beyond. In the mid-1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the business. Francillon consolidated the scattered manufacturing processes into one location at the Longines factory on the right bank of the Suze River, where watches were assembled and finished using mechanical methods. He brought in the young engineer Jacques David to develop the necessary machinery for improving the watchmaking process. By the 1930s, production continued to grow steadily. By 1911, the Longines factory employed over 1,100 workers and shipped its products worldwide. Longines' technical research efforts were rewarded in various forms, winning over 10 Grand Prix awards by the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, establishing itself as the most awarded brand. In 1989, Francillon registered the name Longines and the winged hourglass logo as trademarks. Longines, registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is one of the oldest brands to use the same registered trademark and logo. Evolving watchmaking technology at the factory allowed Longines to gradually establish special relationships with the sports world, providing expertise in various fields, including the iconic sports of the 20th century. Since its founding in 1832, Longines has been based in Switzerland, continuing to create watches with the themes of "tradition," "elegance," and "performance."
