Longines Elegant White Watch L4.809.4.11.2 Imported Parallel Import
| Brand History | |
| In 1832, Auguste Agassiz, brother of the renowned naturalist Louis Agassiz, ventured into the world of watchmaking at a Swiss watch sales company. Under the name Agassiz & Co., he successfully expanded the distribution of watches made through cottage industry across America and beyond. In the mid-1850s, Ernest Francillon, Agassiz's nephew, took over the business. Francillon consolidated the scattered manufacturing processes into one location at the Longines factory on the right bank of the Suze River, where watches were assembled and finished using mechanical methods. He brought in young engineer Jacques David to develop the necessary machinery for improving the manufacturing process. Production continued to grow steadily until the 1930s. By 1911, the Longines factory employed over 1,100 workers and shipped its products worldwide. Longines' technological research efforts were rewarded with over 10 Grand Prix awards by the time of the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, establishing the brand as the most decorated in the industry. In 1989, Francillon trademarked the name Longines along with the winged hourglass logo. Longines remains one of the oldest brands to use the same registered trademark and logo since its inception. Evolving its watchmaking techniques at the factory, Longines gradually forged special relationships with the world of sports, providing expertise across various fields, including the most popular sports of the 20th century. Since its founding in 1832, Longines has been based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, continuing to create watches with the themes of "tradition," "elegance," and "performance." | |
